Volunteer running three marathons for Phoenix Stroke Club

marathonsIain Campbell is running three marathons to raise money for Phoenix Stroke Club, where he has volunteered for the last 10 years.

Iain is running the three marathons in the space of just seven weeks. He will start with the Brighton Marathon on 9 April followed by the Virgin Money London Marathon on 23 April and complete the hat trick on 21 May with the Great Stirling Scottish Marathon.   He is aiming to complete each marathon in under four hours.

Iain is inspired to take up the triple marathon challenge as a way to celebrate his 60th birthday and to raise money for a cause he is passionate about. Iain can be found most Tuesdays at the Phoenix Stroke Club where he cultivates a garden area for the members to enjoy and grows vegetables for the freshly prepared lunches.

Along with his regular volunteer colleague Dave, they also carry out maintenance tasks around the clubhouse, recently relaying a number of paths.  Iain has been known to runs various activities for the members including acting as a quizmaster, bingo caller, exercise coach, musician and provides advice to members and staff on computers and anything technology based.

Iain comments: ‘ I have run the London Marathon before in 2008 to raise money for the Stroke Association and the Phoenix Stroke Club. I am not underestimating the amount of effort required. I am training regularly with my club, the Horsham joggers, and trying to adopt a far healthier lifestyle of sensible eating and drinking with appropriate recovery sessions. So far, the training is going well, but there is a long way to go yet, and the real build-up of training miles has only just started.’

Judy Clark, Manager of Phoenix Stroke Club commented: ‘We are delighted Iain has set himself this target and is raising money for the charity.  So far, we have received sponsorship from Chandlers Building Supplies and are keen to raise as much money as possible from this incredible challenge. Every pound we receive helps to restore the confidence and improve the communication and mobility of our stroke survivors.’
